Engine No. 966 2-8-0. A
very powerful goods locomotive of the 2-8-0 or "Consolidation" type.
This particular engine is designed for burning pulverized
solid fuels
in conjunction with oil. All the latest improvements, superheater, "pop"
safety valves, &c, are fitted. The tender runs on two
bogies, and
contains the hopper, nozzles, &c., for discharging the
fuel to the
firebox. This engine was built at Manchester, and is used
on the very
heavy grades crossing the Pennine Range between Manchester
and Sheffield
via the Woodhead Tunnel. L.&N.E.

Ljungstrom Turbine Driven Locomotive.
A remarkable machine embodying striking
departures from actual practice
so far as locomotive engineering is concerned. The boiler,
superheater,
turbine driven induced draught fan, and coal bunker are carried
on the
front part, and the power equipment and condensing apparatus
on the
rear. The turbine drives three pairs of coupled wheels, and
various
modern improvements are included in the design of this noteworthy-machine.
This engine weighs in running order 126 tons, and was built
at Stockholm. Swedish State Railways.

Locomotive 2300, 4-6-2
Type. The
first of the latest series of Pacific type heavy passenger
engines
designed by the Railway Company, and built at their Angus
Shops in
Montreal. These locomotives haul the Trans-Canada Limited,
and other
fast trains, and are the most powerful of their type in service
in
Canada. The maximuin tractive effort is 42,600 lbs., and
the total
weight of the engine and tender in working order is 490,000
lbs. These
are two-cylinder simple locomotives, using a high degree
of superheat
with improved Walschaert Valve Gear. Canadian Pacific
