Electric Locomotive. A powerful electric locomotive. Direct current is collected from the overhead wires by the pantagraphs, one being placed at each end of the locomotive. The locomotive can be driven from either end, and if necessary two of these locomotives can be coupled together both electrically and mechanically and driven by one man. There are four motors connected by gearing to each axle. A strong headlight is fitted at each end. Built in Svvitzerland. South African Railways.

Electric Train. In the year 1863 the original Metropolitan line was opened from Bishop's Road to Farringdon Street. At that time trains were hauled by steam locomotives. In due course other extensions followed. In 1905 the line was electrified, and the frequent service of trains is a very great advantage. Direct current is used and picked up from the live rail situated at the side of the ordinary rails. The motorman's compartment is at one end of the car and controls three or more trailer cars. Engine No. 1__2-8-4 Tank. A tank engine of the 2-8-4 wheel formation built at Leeds, and used for working on the line between Ludd and Jerusalem, which is very steeply, graded. This line, which was constructed by local labour under the supervision of French Engineers to a gauge of 3.12 feet, was converted to the standard gauge of 4' 8.5" during military operations. Amongst the fittings are a feed-pump, "pop" safety valves, Belpaire firebox, superheater, and a turbine driven generator supplies power for the electric head light. The total weight of the engine in working order is 100 1/4 tons. Palestine Railways.
