Crane Engine No. 16, "Hercules" 0-6-4
Tank. A very useful and special
type of locomotive with crane, built
at Swindon, and intended for
working in yards where heavy
loads have to be lifted. The
cylinders are placed inside the
frames, and water is carried in
the "Pannier " tanks. The Company possesses three
of these
engines, named "Hercules,"
"Cyclops,"and "Steropes." The
total weight in working order
is 68 1/2 tons, and the crane is
capable of lifting anything from
6 to 9 tons. The crane is worked
by a separate donkey engine. Great Western Railway.

Electric Locomotive:
Engine No 13__4-6-4. A high speed electric locomotive of the 4-6-4 wheel formation.
Has three pairs of motors,
and current is collected by the
pantagraphs mounted on the
roof at each end of the middle
compartment. Has been constructed to haul 450 tons on a
level track at an average speed
of 65 miles per hour. Built at
Darlington and has been working on the Newport- Shildon
line. Weight in working order
102 tons. L.&N.E. Railway.

Electric Locomotive No.
402__0-6-0-0-6-0. A very powerful electric locomotive of the 0-6-0-0-6-0 type
built for the metre gauge.
Current is collected from the
overhead wires by means of
pantagraph gear. The motors
develop 1,200 horse power. This
railway is about 250 miles long,
and is operated electrically.
The engineering difficulties encountered in making the line
were enormous. On one twelve
mile stretch there are fifteen
tunnels with a total length of
13,000 feet and a viaduct 700
feet long. Rhaetian Railway.
