Day Nineteen: The Rio Hotel and Casino, The Ron Lucas

The Rio Parade in the Sky
This morning we had the Big Breakfast Buffet, last one until our next trip. We have been eating cereal since we got back from Monument Valley. We went to the Rio via the free shuttle from Harrah’s and saw the Ron Lucas show. He is a ventriloquist, very good, but the theatre is too big for the show. Enjoyed it, but thought the other two afternoon shows were better. |

We had trouble at the Player's Club desk when we went to get Player’s Cards. They wanted Ken's Passport instead of his driver's license. Meanwhile the woman who was serving me was cheerfully accepting my "Proof of Age" Card. She gave me a card and gave us two sets of souvenir beads. |
We went up on the mezzanine balcony to watch the "Parade in the Sky” show. The Mardi Gras floats are suspended from the ceiling. A bit strange, but from the balcony we were watching it at eye level. We didn’t think to go down to see what it looked like from below.
It is an unusual show and worth seeing, but I think the effect of a Mardi Gras parade was spoiled a bit by too few people on the floats and a competing stage show that was being perfomed at one end of the casino while the floats went over the heads of the gamblers on the main floor. They tossed beads occasionally from the floats and there were strolling clowns on the casino floor tossing beads and engaging the crowd. |

The floats were beautiful, but there were obviously many safety strictures. You can pay a fee and ride in one of the floats, which might be quite thrilling.

At dusk we went outside to get some Neon shots of the Rio Signs, but we could never get shots of the big sign. We left at 7:30 and they still hadn't turned it on. Took the shuttle to Harrah’s and got some Panda Express take away. We watched Desperate Housewives, new season, and went to bed. |
