Las Vegas Vacation Diary
Day Nine: Fly to Phoenix, Drive Up to Monument Valley, and Dinosaur Footprints
Flew to Phoenix on America West. Met our friends at the airport and drove six hours to Monument Valley. We considered renting a car in Vegas but the route is not direct and it would be an eight-hour drive from there, plus we would have to do the driving. We drove through some beautiful desert, and the roads were good. |

The flight on America West was good, and very cheap. Our friends booked most of our internal flights for us before we came, because I couldn't get the reservation software to accept the Australian 10 digit phone number. Anyway, we paid $450 for both of us to fly to Phoenix, back to Vegas and then from Vegas to Texas. The service was good and the Phoenix flight was less than an hour.
My first experience with one of the budget airlines.

We had quite a bonus when we got onto the road on the Navaho Reservation. Our friend is an easy-going driver so he stopped immediately when I went into fits when I saw a sign on that said “This way to Dinosaur Footprints”. We were sceptical, but it is fossil territory after all. Crikey, it was the real deal. There were dozens of fossilised Raptor footprints. What a treat! There aren't many sites around and I never thought I would get to the Australian site, and thus didn't think I would ever see any. But there they were. |
We checked into the Hampton Inn in Kayenta and will go to Monument
Valley tomorrow. The Kayenta hotel is very nice and has free wireless
internet, so you are getting this email by courtesy of the Hampton Inn.
