Las Vegas Vacation Diary
Day Two: The Wynn Hotel, the Fashion Show Mall and The Legends
We walked over to the Wynn and spent 4 or 5 hours there. It is truly beautiful and there are many with mature-age guests- some who seem to be in their nineties - riding around in little electric scooters.
We had a $5 cappuccino at the coffee shop. Which is a little pricey, but thought the reviewer in the Melbourne paper who said it was not good value for money was probably wrong, or got there in the early start up stage. But then again, the Wynn is a place you shouldn't go if you have to worry about the price of the room. I expect the rooms are very luxurious if they match the rest of the hotel! |

On the way up the Strip to the Wynn there is a huge construction site. We think it might be the Palazzo extension for the Venetian. After the Wynn we walked over to the Fashion Show Mall by way of those walkovers that are at many major intersections in Las Vegas. Crossing at street level is a lot more adventurous, but somewhat scary. There is a lot of traffic. |

on the Strip?-Walking the Las Vegas Strip - Stop Seven - Wynn and Fashion
Show Mall
The Fashion Show Mall is a typical shopping mall, but not too useful to us because we were looking for blank CD's to copy our pictures. We should copy all the latest pictures each time we move rooms and Ken mostly brought blank DVD's for large scale backup, so we don't have enough CD's for the smaller batches. We didn’t find a computer shop, which is logical since it is called the “Fashion Show” Mall. Ken did try on some shoes, but mainly we ate at the food court (Kentucky Fried Chicken and Nathan's Hot Dog). |

We stumbled home past Treasure Island (now TI) to take pictures of the refurbished night-time pirate show set. The pirate battle has been revamped and is now the story of a handsome pirate who is captured by Sexy Sirens. We'll go over one night to see it, it is just across the way. |

Saw our second Segue Scooter on the sidewalk. We saw the first one on the Monorail platform.
Noticed security signs for the TI show. Strollers appear to be banned. Security in general seems to be high, but not intrusive. The Wynn had security sniffer dogs around. However, Las Vegas has a high security presence anyway because of the large amount of cash that is moved around.
We did not make it to the Guggenheim or Venetian, today, but we did pay to see Steve Wynn’s small private collection of Impressionists and his Andy Warhol of himself. A nice little collection, but only ten or so paintings; a Rembrandt, two Picassos, a Degas ballet dancer, a Monet of lilly pads and a bridge, and a Manet portrait that was lovely. Also a Mondrian and, of course, Warhol’s portrait of Steve Wynn.
We went to the Legends concert this evening. Got the tickets ahead on the internet and thus got a free dinner and a drink at the table. Better deal that seem to be offered here. We used the dinner coupon at breakfast, of course. Ken had grits and has had them every day since! The Legends had a Good Elvis impersonator. Aretha Franklin was better than Aretha. Shania Twain was excellent. Bruce Springsteen was good. The Temptations were lovely. All in all, very enjoyable. Collapse! |

At the Legends a young woman in a business suit sat across from us. She had been at the Mandalay Bay at company expense on a conference and then switched to the Flamingo for her own vacation. She said the Mandalay Bay was amazing, it didn't even smell of smoke. By the way, many gamblers smoke, and everything is done to cater to them, but non-smoking rooms are available and are just fine. We asked about the Flamingo and she said the rooms were probably nicer than the Imperial Palace, but a bit threadbare. Our room is newly renovated and just great. We switch to the Luv Tub room tomorrow.

The Imperial Palace has been purchased by Harrah’s to make room for expansion, but I heard that they will delay tearing it down because they have property that was damaged in the New Orleans hurricane and were probably depending on the cash flow from one to pay for the rebuilding of the other. Now they will probably be using the cash from this one to get the other one in shape again.
