National
Treasure is
a bit of treasure itself. It's an "old
school" Disney adventure film, produced by the
prodigious Jerry Bruckheimer, and directed by Jon
Turteltaub. It's a fun adventure picture for the
whole family. I'd
give
it the same
rating as Pirates of the Caribbean (same producer)
on the entertainment meter, although Pirates actually
has
a less interesting
plot.
Nicholas Cage plays
the role of Benjamin Franklin Gates, the latest
in a long line of treasure "protectors".
Inspired as a boy by his grandfather's tale of an amazing
treasure hidden somewhere in America, he begins
a quest to find it.
In the course of his search, the villainous nature
of his most recent financial backer, Ian (Sean Bean),
is revealed, and the race is on.
Jon Voight puts in
an effective, at times humorous, performance as Gate's
father, Patrick, who no longer believes that the
treasure is
real, yet has an obvious interest in what is
happening. Get some popcorn, a vanilla Coke, and some
M&Ms - enjoy it to the max.
