It's been seven years since the last Star Trek movie (Nemesis in 2002), and given the mediocre caliber of the last six Star Trek films, I haven't missed it at all on the big screen.
However, things have just changed in a large way. Star Trek (2009) reboots the franchise in a superbly grand style. Be sure you don't drink too much water before this film starts, because you won't care to miss one minute of this action-packed roller coaster.
Some crucial elements of the script are lifted from a Star Trek Voyager television episode (Year of Hell, seaon 4 episode 8). But these elements have been finely crafted into a great movie script, directed with polish and verve by J.J. Abrams, and acted by a mostly young cast, with a quality reflecting respect for the great legacy that these characters have in the science fiction culture of planet Earth. Not since Star Trek: The Voyage Home, in 1986, have we been given such an entertaining Star Trek cinema experience. Star Trek is back! Don't miss it.
