I was about to write a "not as good as the first one" review. But I've thought about what I liked in Iron Man 2 - and, surprise; the list is long enough to be more generous in my comments.
Mickey Rourke is a first-class villan, Scarlett Johansson (as the Black Widow) is just good value no matter who she plays. Gweneth Paltrow now owns her role, and Sam Rockwell is fine as rival arms manufacturer Justin Hammer. Don Cheadle as Rhodes (War Machine) is an asset, and the story was a reasonable progression from the previous tale.
I guess the thing that miffs me is - why does Iron Man have to battle another armored man (or men) yet again? It's like every Superman on film is always battling Lex Luther. The world of Marvel and DC villans has a great diversity of characters to pick from, so what's the problem?. It's lazy "don't mess with success" writing. The Spiderman films did not make this mistake. New
film, new villan, thank you very much.
Still, glad I saw Iron Man 2, and I recommend it as a fun way to spend 2 hours. Once again, it is a good idea to stay until the end of the credits. |
