Chinese
director Zhang Yimou gets the most out of this tale
of a 3rd century
swordsman
called Nameless, played by Jet Li. Nameless is brought
before a grateful King of Qin to tell him how he
defeated three deadly assassins who were the king's
mortal enemies. As his tales of combat and strategy
unfold he draws nearer and nearer to the king while
he is rewarded with gold and property for each assassin
he has killed. But there are several twists and turns
to come.
Some of the scenes
are just beautiful, and the fight sequences show
state-of-the-art wirework
and choreography.
The story remains interesting throughout, and the
conclusion, while not satisfying, is logical. Hero is
recommended viewing.
