When I saw the 1981 film CLASH OF THE TITANS I liked it a lot on the story level. However, Some of the special effects seemed dated even in 1981. Ray Harryhausen's Pegasus was sub-par, while his Medusa was amazingly scary. And there was the problem of color control in mixing live action with animation in 1981.
Of course, this 2010 version has roughly the same great story, and none of the technical limitations. So, in my estimation, it is more enjoyable than the 1981 film, but not a great deal. The character of Hades is an excellent addition to the story, and finely acted by Ralph Fiennes. And I'd love to see a Ferryman-and-boat action figure on the shelf soon. It's a great piece of set design.
CLASH OF THE TITANS gains nothing in 3D, except your extra dollars for the plastic glasses. See it in normal 2D and save yourself a bit of a headache. 3D seems to be best relegated to HD animated features, like BOLT. Even AVATAR did not benefit from 3D. Until the technology advances, I agree with Michael Bay who says, "Right now, it looks like fake 3-D, with layers that are very apparent." |
