First off, ChessMaster Challenge has very useful and insightful tutorials on the basics on chess play. Be sure to download the extra file for some of the tutorials.

Another highly useful and enjoyable feature of Chessmaster Challenge was the "Fun" area in which you can try your hand at solving some chess-related problems (e.g. find the fork, find the pin, mate in one, etc.)

The actual "Play" mode in Chess Master Challenge was also very good: you can choose whether you want to play a Ranked Game (the outcome of which affects your player "score"), or just go head to head against one of the very many included personalities. If you feel that you are really good, or just feel lucky, you can also battle computerized versions of the styles of play of many famous players, such as Karpov, and even Chessmaster himself. The major challenge in this mode is the inability to have unlimited time. When playing, you HAVE to have a chess clock.
