About
the Egypt Tomb Scenes - Papyrus Art screensaver

The beauty of ancient Egyptian art is known and appreciated
worldwide. One reason is the sale of colorful modern reproductions
of ancient tomb scenes and papyrus illustrations. This papyrus
art is produced in Egypt for the tourist souvenir market.
We were told, when we visited Egypt, that they were
invented by Dr. Rageb. We don't know for sure, but they are certainly
a wonderful souvenir.
You can visit factories where they will show
you how the papyrus was made in ancient times. These papyrus factories
sell some of the more elaborate and beautiful papyrus art. But
papyrus art is also available from street vendors everywhere.
As you travel through Egypt, they are one of the
most common tourist souvenirs you will see. They are produced by
printing the sketch outlines of a tomb scene on a piece of
modern papyrus. Then the scene is colored by hand.
Many of these tomb scenes are no longer available
for public viewing in Egypt as they have been degraded by exposure,
illegally sold on the antiquities market, or legally exported to
museums
and collectors outside Egypt.
Some of the papyrus art is based on sketches of long vanished scenes made by
early excavators, and some is based on ancient papyrus documents recovered
from tombs and temples. Wall murals in temples are also often copied.
Here is an example of a sketch drawn in the 1880's,
that we have partially colored in.
While papyrus art is sold everywhere in Egypt, and
the typical tourist buys several pictures, if not dozens of them,
they are some
of the
most cherished souvenirs of the trip. Their vibrant colors
and beautiful compositions are faithful representations of the
joyous and lively spirit of Egyptian art.
